City parks staff told the advisory board the city was awarded a $750,000 matching grant from the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department to rebuild Grama Park’s skate facility, a project staff estimates at $1.5 million in total with the required city match.
"We submitted for a $750,000 grant through Texas Parks and Wildlife. It's a matching grant. So if we get it, the city has to put up $750,000 to match it. So it's a $1,500,000 project," Jacob said, later adding, "we just found out today that we were awarded that grant." Staff said planning and design work would follow, with hiring a design firm and bringing options back to the board before construction (staff projected design work to begin in summer or fall).
During discussion, Caitlin questioned whether the park needed a renovation, stating, "That park doesn't need renovated." Jacob responded the plan is for a whole new design that would replace the existing skate area, add restrooms, improve parking and redo basketball courts as funding allows. City staff clarified the award requires a local match that the council had preapproved prior to application.
The item was presented as an informational announcement during the staff report; there was no board vote recorded on accepting funds or allocating match dollars during this meeting. Staff said they will return with plans and options for board and public input.
