Board advances Southwest 20th Avenue planning and presses FDOT on Archer Road omission

The Metropolitan Transportation Planning Organization voted Dec. 2 to advance the planning phase of the Southwest 20th Avenue Complete Streets project to fiscal 2025 so the county can pursue competitive USDOT discretionary funds.
County staff explained the request was to shift the planning phase forward to align with an anticipated competitive grant cycle. The board accepted staff's recommendation and approved the Transportation Improvement Program amendment by roll call vote.
During FDOT's presentation of the tentative five‑year work program, Commissioner Hartford (S2) raised a separate concern: a four‑laning of Archer Road (Tower Road to Parker Road) that the legislature funded for $2,250,000 did not appear in the FDOT schedule. FDOT planner Brown (S12) said she did not have an immediate answer and would review the record with her team. Commissioner Hartford moved to revise the staff recommendation to ask FDOT to add Archer Road to the planning list; the motion was seconded and voted on. The board recorded one dissenting vote (Commissioner Willets) on that motion; staff will work with FDOT to clarify placement and schedule.
Other FDOT items discussed included the Newberry Road bicycle facility, a SunTrail bicycle/pedestrian project, resurfacing projects and the University Avenue resurfacing and lighting schedule; transit director Jesus Gomez described the Compass Transit proposal to increase east–west and north–south service.
What happens next: county staff will advance the SW 20th Avenue planning application for discretionary funds; FDOT will report back on the Archer Road omission and on potential to incorporate Complete Streets restriping into University Avenue resurfacing.
