The Planning & Zoning Board approved variances May 14 to permit a hangar addition on a hangar home that will allow the owner to park and maintain a private airplane nearby his residence. Staff described the request as variances from site-dimension standards and a reduced rear-yard setback to accommodate a hangar door and taxiway access.
An applicant who spoke at the podium said the structure already exists and that the requested change would allow him to expand toward the taxiway to move his airplane into the hangar; he indicated he had discussed the plan with the airport manager. Neighbors and members of the airport community spoke in favor: "We've all come here to support Clayton and what he wants to do," one supporter said, adding the project would "enhance the airport, the community and everything." Another neighbor, John Craig (1903 12th Street), said he supports the proposal.
After board questions about taxiway clearance and whether the project would impede other aircraft, a motion to approve VA2502 was made, seconded and passed by roll-call vote.
