The Design Review Board approved a driveway canopy for a single‑family home at 7381 SW 67th Court to accommodate a wheelchair user after the applicant, Angela Fife, described the safety need.
Mark Alvarez told the board the canopy qualifies under code as a walkway canopy and meets height and setback requirements, subject to the applicant supplying a minor dimensional note to ensure van clearance around the canopy legs. Angela Fife said her husband “suffered a stroke last year” and that a small canopy will keep them dry and safe during the rainy season when transferring from the house to a vehicle.
Board members offered constructive design suggestions. One member recommended checking that a curved canopy fits under the existing overhang and suggested a rectilinear form if vertical clearance is tight. Another suggested increasing canopy width from 8 feet to 9–10 feet to improve weather protection; the applicant confirmed the post spacing between the two columns would be approximately 9 feet and was comfortable with the dimensions discussed.
A motion to approve the canopy passed on a recorded vote. Staff noted that final permit review will check exact dimensions and clearances before issuing building permits.
