DeGrow said the board previously authorized creating a public defender’s office and that the county has historically used contracts with local law firms for public defense. The RFP the board approved to advertise would seek firms to provide public defender services while the in‑house public defender office is stood up. "We actually have two contracts, one a main contract and an overflow contract," DeGrow said; the plan described in the meeting record is to streamline to a single primary contract while preserving short‑term redundancy through a contract for overflow coverage until the public defender office is staffed.
DeGrow described the intended contract term as an initial one‑year agreement with options to extend for two additional years to allow flexibility during the office start‑up and to ensure continuity of representation in overflow situations.
The board moved and seconded a motion to advertise the RFP. The motion carried on roll call and the board directed staff to post the RFP and return with proposals for subsequent evaluation.
What’s next: The county will advertise the RFP and accept proposals. The board will review submissions and may return at a future meeting to select a contract award or take additional procurement steps.
