Rutherford County Medicaid enrollment surpasses projection; county selected for UNC collaboratory research

Erika Hunt, director of Rutherford County Department of Social Services, reported Oct. 30 that the county had exceeded a previously stated projection for Medicaid enrollment. Hunt said the projection of 4,054 enrollees for the county has been surpassed and that the county now counts 4,217 people enrolled in the program.
Hunt said the county provided the monthly report for a year to track enrollment growth and suggested the board may discontinue routine monthly reporting now that the projection has been met. "We had a projection of 4,054 for our county...we've already exceeded that number at 4,217 and growing each month," Hunt said.
Separately, Hunt said Rutherford County was selected for a collaboratory research project administered through UNC Chapel Hill. She described a roughly $150,000 funding pocket for outside researchers to study department operations and work with staff and community stakeholders; the county has an MOA and will review RFP responses and interview candidate teams.
What’s next: Hunt said staff will confer with commissioners about ongoing reporting of Medicaid expansion metrics and will participate in selecting a research team if the board supports moving forward.
