At a special July 29 meeting the Berkeley City Council approved the consent calendar after a brief public-comment period.
Kentrell Killins, who identified himself as representing Live Free, the city's contracted gun-violence intervention program, asked the council to approve a recently awarded grant so funds could be released to expand staff. "We currently have 2 and a half life coaches and outreach workers," Killins said, and asked the city to "adopt and allow the grant to be executed as stated" so the program can add two more staff positions to respond to crises.
An additional commenter (identified in the transcript as Public commenter S6) questioned the grant's budget breakdown, asking whether the program was entering a second year and asserting a roughly $1,000,000 total with about $450,000 allocated over two years to a police-analyst salary rather than to the contracted outreach team. "$450,000 for 2 years," the commenter said.
Council member S4 moved to approve the consent calendar; the presiding officer (S3) asked whether there were objections, none were raised, and the motion was announced as passed. The agenda then moved to scheduled presentations, where staff began a work-session on the city's homeless system.
