Alameda County supervisors approve Carson budget allocation to support community mental wellness groups

The Alameda County Board of Supervisors voted unanimously Dec. 31 to approve a budget allocation recommended by Supervisor Carson to support community-based groups working on mental wellness and emotional trauma.

Supervisor Carson told the board the allocation was intended to help smaller community groups that have lived experience in affected neighborhoods but lack administrative capacity to pursue grants. "It was a clear, mistake just to go on the record on my part and our office part that is on this late agenda, item," he said, acknowledging the late placement. He described a two-year capacity-building effort led by Leticia Henderson to develop and support emerging organizations.

Carson said the likely recipient includes an organizer he referred to as "Mr. Fab," who regularly convenes large weekly sessions addressing emotional trauma and mental wellness in the Bay Area. "On any given night, you can go on any Wednesday night... Mr. Fab has probably about a 100 and so many people attending, weekly sessions," he said.

The motion to approve the allocation was moved by Supervisor Carson and seconded by Supervisor Marquez. The clerk called the roll: Supervisor Halbert — Aye; Supervisor Marquez — Aye; Supervisor Tam — Aye; Supervisor Carson — Yes; President Meili — Yes. The motion carried.

A public commenter identified as Allen thanked the board for convening and expressed appreciation for the funding and the organization's work.

The board did not attach additional conditions in the meeting discussion; the chair said staff would follow up on implementation details. The item passed before the board recessed for a closed session.

What happens next: staff follow-up was promised by the board so that award and administrative details can be finalized after the holiday period.
