Fire chief seeks grants for particulate hoods and hazmat training

The Green City Council’s committees on Tuesday reviewed two grant requests aimed at reducing firefighter exposures and keeping training up to date.
In Finance Committee discussion of resolution 2025‑R36, Fire Chief explained the Ohio Bureau of Workers’ Compensation grant would fund 61 particulate hoods and 61 pairs of washable gloves so firefighters can change into clean gear while on duty. “So its purpose is to protect your head and neck,” the chief said, describing the hood’s face piece, helmet interface and the added particulate barrier intended to reduce exposure to combustion byproducts.
The chief said the grant is capped at $15,000 and is structured as an 80/20 match: “So that $15,000 is actually 12,000 from BWC, 3,000 from the city of Greene,” he said, adding the department had gathered three quotes and the lowest then-available quote was $14,030. He said the actual cost will be slightly less than the $12,000/$3,000 split if the quote holds.
Separately, Public Safety Committee members considered resolution 2025‑R37 to accept Public Utilities Commission of Ohio funds for hazardous-materials refresher training. The department had sought $9,150 but the award pool for the cycle was smaller; the chief said the department’s reimbursement award was $6,100 and that the city already budgeted training appropriations that could cover the difference so the training could proceed.
Committee chairs indicated they would place both grant measures on the regular council agenda for final action to allow the chief to move forward with procurement and scheduling.
No committee member voiced opposition to either request during the committee block.
