At the Dec. 11 City of Edgewater code enforcement hearing, Special Magistrate Ryan Knight upheld a code citation against the owner of 2220 Kumquat Drive but reduced the daily fines from the maximum requested amount to $100 per day, totaling $1,200 for Nov. 20–Dec. 1.
Jacob McLaughlin, code enforcement officer, said the property owned by Steven Hendricks had multiple prior code contacts dating to 2022 for trailer storage, parking and inoperable vehicles. McLaughlin testified the truck at issue had expired registration (Feb. 2023), was parked in the side yard in violation of code, and that the property is a repeat violator; staff recommended a $150 citation and daily fines totaling $6,000 for the period staff initially assessed.
Steven Hendricks appeared and told the magistrate the truck belonged to his grandson; he said the vehicle was registered and moved on Dec. 1 and asked the magistrate to reduce fines. Knight found the violation had been corrected and balanced prior violations and corrective actions; he upheld the $150 citation and set daily fines at $100 per day from Nov. 20 through Dec. 1, totaling $1,200.
Knight reminded the respondent that future repeat violations could result in steeper penalties and that appeal of the magistrate’s decision is available to circuit court within 30 days.
