EDA signals interest in transient docks at Beech Park but defers funding decision

The Chisago Lakes Economic Development Authority expressed interest in pursuing transient docks at Beech Park on Jan. 20, but deferred any formal funding commitment pending design details and a budget review.

Tom, speaking for city staff, described a park commission plan that would place transient docks on the south side of Beech Park. He estimated purchase and installation costs at between $20,000 and $30,000 and asked whether commissioners had appetite for the EDA to provide partial or full funding. The goal, he said, would be to have docks in place before Memorial Day.

Commissioners raised design and placement concerns, including how many slips would be installed, avoiding the swimming area, conflicts among pontoons, kayakers and anglers, wind exposure, and the need for local expertise on layout. Tom said installation would likely be a one-time, contractor-handled expense and that seasonal removal and winterization could be part of the contractor's scope; ongoing maintenance would be handled by the city.

Commissioners noted the EDA's standing fund balance was about $123,000 and that paying most of the dock cost from that balance would be possible but should not disrupt other earmarked projects. Several commissioners indicated preliminary support for exploring the idea further and asked staff to return with precise cost-sharing options, site layout proposals and a budget plan before any formal vote.

No formal motion or vote on funding occurred at the meeting; commissioners instead agreed to signal direction and request follow-up information.
