Resident urges moratorium on vape shops, asks council to limit locations and regulate signage

During public comment on Nov. 10, resident Pat Carleski of 3878 Greenfield Road addressed the council about vape (vape smoke) shops.
Carleski commended the council for banning marijuana dispensaries and said the city should now address the proliferation of vape shops. She said the shops’ bright neon signs, circus‑like exteriors and decorations were designed to attract children and young people and that vaping is not harmless and "does cause lung damage." She asked council to declare an immediate moratorium on new shops, require licensing before they open, impose distance requirements between shops and from schools, parks, day‑care centers, churches and medical facilities, regulate signage and exterior appearance to avoid attracting youth, and create "significant fines and penalties for violations." "Council and city administration have the knowledge and experience to do this," Carleski said, and urged residents to report new openings to the city.
Council accepted the comment and no formal action or staff direction was recorded during the meeting on Nov. 10.
