Public safety committee backs resolution to join national opioid settlements, citing deadlines

Counsel (the law director) explained the resolution has two parts: participation in Purdue Pharma LP's chapter 11 plan, which proposes a $6.5 billion payment schedule (disclosed in counsel remarks as part of talk about the proposed plan) and participation in a separate settlement pool totaling approximately $1.2 billion to resolve claims against several secondary manufacturers named in the resolution. "Purdue... the plan proposed is for Purdue/the Sackler family to pay $6,500,000,000 and that will happen over the course of 15 years," counsel said.
Counsel said city officials previously adopted an Ohio memorandum of understanding to facilitate participation and that national negotiation calls continue. He explained the paperwork deadlines: the Purdue participation form must be submitted by Sept. 30 and the secondary-manufacturer participation forms by Oct. 8. Counsel recommended authorizing the mayor's office to submit the required paperwork so Green meets the deadlines.
Committee chair Mrs. Babbitt and other council members agreed to place the item on the regular meeting agenda and to make the appropriate motions that evening so the city can meet filing deadlines.
The committee transcript does not include a final council vote; it records the committee chair's plan to move the resolution at the regular meeting to satisfy the deadline.
