Council denies conditional-use permit for proposed pawnshop on South Main Street

The Weatherford City Council voted to deny a conditional-use permit request to open a pawnshop at 1205 South Main Street.
Chad Martin presented staff’s review of the application for CU P-25-0008 and said surrounding uses — restaurants and a ninth-grade campus located nearby — made the pawnshop proposal incompatible with the area. "Because of the surrounding uses, they feel like it's incompatible with surrounding uses being restaurants and also the ninth-grade campus," Martin said, and recommended disapproval.
The mayor opened the public hearing for the CUP; no members of the public spoke and the hearing was closed. Council member Zach Smith made a motion to deny the permit; the council voted to deny the application.
The denial leaves the property under its existing commercial zoning. The council did not adopt alternative conditions or direct staff to return with modifications during the meeting.
Any applicant wishing to pursue a different use or revised application must follow the city’s permit and zoning process for future consideration.
