The Solano County Board of Supervisors unanimously adopted a resolution recognizing February 2026 as Black History Month and presented a proclamation to local artist Gail Birdsong at its Feb. 3 meeting.
The board voted 4–0 to adopt the monthlong recognition after Supervisor Williams introduced the item and invited Birdsong to the podium. Supervisor Williams highlighted the month’s theme and the county display of Birdsong’s artwork in the administration offices.
Birdsong, identified by the board as a longtime local artist and former county employee, thanked supervisors and recounted the historical origins of Black History Month and its meaning to Solano County. "This recognition and acknowledgment from Solano County shows we continue to move in the right direction," she said.
The resolution notes the 1976 expansion of the observance to a monthlong celebration and affirms the county’s intent to highlight the contributions of African Americans to local civic life and culture. Supervisors invited members of the public and county staff to join a photo at the podium following the presentation.
The county did not take any formal policy action beyond adopting the resolution and presenting the proclamation. The board moved on to other agenda items following the ceremony.
