Commissioners approve $25,000 for Pre-K modular renovations, defer bus-garage HVAC replacement

At the June 1 meeting, the board discussed two school capital requests: replacement of an HVAC unit for the school bus garage bay and renovations to a Pre-K modular unit. Vice-Chairman Jason R. Jones told the board the Pre-K program provides daycare services that support teacher recruitment, particularly in rural schools, and suggested funding the requested renovations.
Commissioner E. T. Mitchell moved to approve $25,000 for the Pre-K modular renovations and not to approve the HVAC replacement at the school bus garage bay; Commissioner Chadwick Howard seconded the motion. Discussion followed in which Chairman Denny Bucher indicated he supported replacing the office-space HVAC unit but acknowledged clarification that only the bay unit required replacement. County Manager Jack B. Veit III told the board that the $25,000 would be implemented through a budget amendment in July. The board held consensus on the approach and did not take a formal roll-call vote at the meeting.
The board directed staff to include the $25,000 Pre-K modular renovation funding in a July budget amendment and to provide any remaining technical information on the HVAC request before a final decision.
