Metuchen council passes first readings on five ordinances, sets March 9 public hearings

At the meeting the clerk read ordinance 2026-o4, described as repealing and replacing sections of the borough code related to affordable housing to address the Fair Housing Act and the Uniform Housing Affordability Controls (UHAC). Council president (speaker_3) moved that the ordinance "be passed on 1st reading, published according to law, and a public hearing set down for Monday, 03/09/2026." The motion was seconded and carried on a roll call vote.
The council then read and voted to pass on first reading ordinance 2026-o5, adopting a redevelopment plan for 12 and 16 Pearl Street; ordinance 2026-o6, an amendment to the redevelopment plan for the expanded Metuchen Arts District; and ordinance 2026-o7, which updates pool fees. Each ordinance was moved for first reading by the council president, seconded, and passed on roll call with the public hearings scheduled for March 9.
Council members also approved the new business consent agenda, which included multiple resolutions and a separate motion to authorize payment of the bill list in the amount of $4,472,612.29 (resolution 2026-103). Council members noted a previously introduced salary ordinance had been pulled because it had not been properly advertised; staff said it will be reintroduced after sufficient publication. No final adoptions or ordinance enactments occurred; the council completed first readings and scheduled public hearings, allowing the public an opportunity to comment before final votes.
