Rutherford awarded $664,000 for Union Avenue and West End planning

Councilwoman Del Rey Cohen announced at the Dec. 22 meeting that Rutherford was one of 43 awardees statewide to receive a competitive grant from the state transportation program (NJDOT referenced in the meeting). She said the borough applied amid 67 statewide applications and was awarded $664,000 to support streetscape enhancements and pedestrian-safety planning on Union Avenue and in the West End.
Del Rey Cohen said the grant will follow a two-year planning process before physical work begins and will require federal/state approvals and steps with grant administrators and the borough’s grant writers. She thanked Bruno and Associates and noted Claire from that firm prepared the application package. Council members said they anticipate assembling resident input, and Del Rey Cohen said the borough would solicit community members with experience in arts, streetscape, planning and related fields to participate in planning efforts.
What happens next: borough staff will meet with grant writers and stakeholders in early 2026 to begin the planning timeline and public engagement phases. Del Rey Cohen emphasized the planning nature of the award and that construction is not immediate.
