Middletown police chief reports recent arrests, steady call volume and upcoming accreditation award

The Middletown police chief gave the commission an overview of recent law‑enforcement activity at the department’s Sept. 15 meeting, highlighting several arrests, ongoing homicide work and an upcoming state accreditation award.

The chief said Officer Jacob Godwin received a drunk‑driving enforcement award and that detectives arrested a man accused of scamming an elderly woman out of $49,000; that suspect was extradited from Texas. He also reported a second arrest in an Elm Street shooting and described detective involvement in a child‑predator sting that led to a weekend arrest. "We made our 2nd arrest in the Elm Street shooting," the chief said, and added outside assistance on other investigations, including one tied to a stolen vehicle originating in Middletown.

On departmental operations, the chief said overtime is trending downward compared with September of last year while calls for service remain around 5,600. He reported the department responded to four nonfatal overdoses in September. "Monthly report, overtime, we are trending downward compared to September of last year," he said, and confirmed the overdose incidents were nonfatal.

The chief also provided an accountability update: the department will receive a state CLEAR accreditation award in November, and staffers including the accreditation manager and a lieutenant will attend the presentation in Florida.

The commission took no formal policy votes on these items; the chief’s remarks were delivered as the department’s regular monthly report and for informational purposes.
