Resident presents survey finding access barriers to mental-health care; asks council to consider committee

Ismail Ali told the council he surveyed patients about barriers to accessing mental-health care and presented copies of the data to council members. According to Ali, nearly 50% of surveyed patients said it was "very difficult" to access appropriate mental-health resources; 64% identified wait times and limited availability as major barriers, and 46% said they lacked guidance on how to find services.
Ali urged the council to consider forming a committee focused on mental-health services and outreach to help residents obtain care, including telehealth options to reduce travel barriers. He said he planned to present the findings to the Health Foundation of La Porte and asked the council to place local mental-health resources on a future workshop agenda.
The mayor asked whether Ali had contacted existing providers such as Health Link or the Swanson Center; Ali said he had not yet but was planning outreach to the Health Foundation. Council members did not take formal action on Ali's request at the July 6 meeting.
