Sheridan Prep fifth-graders present school carbon-footprint project to Assembly

Miss Romero introduced four fifth-graders from Sheridan Preparatory Academy who presented a class project that measured their school's carbon footprint and proposed a cafeteria "share bin" to cut food waste.

The students — Serenity Adams, Maurice Adams, Aymir Montanes and Destiny Jonas — told the chamber they had calculated emissions from "transportation, water usage, electricity, garbage, and food waste," and called the effort the "Carbon Eliminators." Miss Romero said she was impressed by their work and asked the chamber to extend them the courtesies of the floor.

On behalf of the visitors, the presiding officer welcomed the students and their chaperones, praising the group: "You are amazing. It's wonderful to have you here today to see and hear all of the great works that you are doing. The future is now and you're right in the middle of it." The students were identified as proposing a "share bin" for cafeteria food to reduce waste; no formal action or vote on the proposal was recorded on the floor.

The appearance was part of a series of brief introductions during the session; the students were given the privileges of the floor and then the chamber returned to its business agenda.
