City parks staff provided a status update on the sustainable parks management plan prepared by consultant WRT, summarizing outreach, survey results and the plan’s five chapters covering management assessment, community engagement, system-wide guidelines, amenity-specific guidance and implementation.
"WRT contract was announced at the August...They started their work in earnest in September," Nancy, a city parks staff member, told the commission and said the consultant conducted pop-up outreach, a survey and meetings with maintenance contractors and public works. She said staff hopes to have WRT return to the Park Commission for a June presentation and that council will receive the report afterward.
Commissioners and a public commenter urged clearer opportunities for commissioner review of proposed solutions. Derek Keating asked whether June would be the finalization and recommended a third presentation of the draft to the commission so members can review proposed solutions before the report goes to council. Nancy said she will update the commission at the next meeting and that staff will coordinate outreach and communications with the city’s communications team.
The commission did not take a formal vote on the plan at the meeting; staff indicated WRT will present draft recommendations in June and staff will seek commissioner feedback to inform any council submittal.
