Mayor Graves and Neva White spotlight Hampton music venues as part of placemaking initiative

Hampton Mayor Graves and library director Neva White on Tuesday used a ceremonial council spotlight to highlight how local music venues are advancing the city's placemaking agenda, recognizing three Hampton venues honored this year at the Veer Music Awards.

"Placemaking focuses on creating vibrant, authentic places that reflect and celebrate our community's unique culture, history, and character," Neva White, library director and leader of the council's placemaking strategic priority, told the council. "It's about creating spaces where people feel connected, welcomed and inspired."

Brian Marchese, of the city's marketing and outreach team, said the Veer Music Awards recognize excellence across the Hampton Roads music scene and noted that three Hampton venues stood out this year: Victoria Station (also presented as Big Pink Music), Stuffed and the Vanguard. "Together, they show how music is helping shape Hampton into a destination, where people can gather, connect, and experience something meaningful," Marchese said.

Marchese described Victoria Station/Big Pink as a member-supported nonprofit listening room that hosts open mics, music circles and songwriter showcases; he credited the venue with community fundraising and mutual aid efforts for musicians affected by the Nashville flooding. He invited Kelly Murphy and Victoria Station representatives forward for recognition.

He also highlighted Stuffed's Open Mic Jam, hosted by Patrick Ryan, which was recognized for its collaborative format in which performers are backed by a house band. Marchese invited Patrick Ryan, owner Casey Huss and other staff to the dais.

Describing the Vanguard Brew Pub & Distillery, Marchese noted its location in a former National Guard armory on North King Street and called it a versatile venue that has hosted local and national acts since opening. He invited Randy Thomas and representatives from the Vanguard to join the presentation.

The presentation included a brief list of other local music sites, including the Rhythm Room, Noir, Piccola's, the American Theatre and Coliseum. Mayor Graves thanked the organizers and venue operators, said the venues draw patrons from across Hampton Roads and closed the spotlight by inviting participants for group and individual photographs. The mayor adjourned the ceremonial session following the presentation.

The council's remarks were ceremonial and no formal actions or votes were taken during the spotlight segment.
