Police announce new stop sign and proposed red-light/speed cameras at high-crash sites

Chief Steve Austin told the Special Public Safety Commission on April 27 that the department will install an eastbound stop sign at the Eastern Avenue and Silver Street intersection and that the state Department of Transportation has offered red-light and speed-camera equipment for locations the city flagged as high-crash.
Austin said the Silver Street change will convert a two-way stop into a three-way stop (adding an eastbound stop) to reduce near-miss collisions at the hill intersection and that the change follows a traffic recommendation tied to recent construction and safety concerns.
Separately, Austin said DOT has proposed two red-light cameras at the High Street and Newfield Street intersections with Washington Street and a speed-camera location on Route 17 in the Bush Hill Road area (the city previously considered a camera at that location). He said the DOT will provide equipment and that the city must conduct state-required speed studies and public hearings under statutory permitting processes before any cameras are activated.
The chief described the DOT-supported program as a potential way to reduce fatalities and serious crashes; he said any installation would be phased and would require further council and public processes. No camera placements were activated at the meeting; staff said studies and hearings would follow.
