The Weatherford Historic Landmarks Commission reviewed a proposed local historic landmark plaque program during a July work session, focusing on design, cost and who would pay for the markers. Chair (Staff member) presented a bronze sample and said she has obtained "three quotes" that range "about $1,000 to $2,000 at least," and discussed 8‑ to 18‑inch size options.
Commissioners debated whether plaques should be attached to buildings or mounted on freestanding posts. The Chair said property owners would be asked to purchase plaques and suggested ordering multiple plaques at once could lower unit cost. Commissioners cited an existing Weatherford plaque at Whistle Hill Cafe as an example of local placement.
Several members urged the commission to prepare outreach and education materials explaining the landmark application, available tax credits and other incentives. The Chair said staff would research vendor sizing and pricing and bring an update and sample brochure at the next meeting for commission review.
No formal vote was taken on implementing the plaque program during the work session; staff will return with vendor options, estimated costs and proposed next steps.
