Transportation committee: Massillon Road resurfacing slated for July; roundabouts, crosswalk activation and Southwood Drive bids discussed
Summary
Transportation Chair Mister Maker asked for a road-construction update: Massillon Road resurfacing is expected in July under flagging rather than closures; cameras will replace loop detectors on signals; roundabout cameras and crosswalk activation require additional setup and cabinet relocation; Southwood Drive Phase 1 is expected to be out to bid before July 1.

The Transportation, Connectivity and Stormwater Committee on June 10 received an update on multiple road projects and signal upgrades.
Public works staff Mister Pickett said the Massillon Road resurfacing does not yet have a firm start date but is likely to occur in July and will be completed under flaggers so lanes remain open. He said the new signal upgrades will replace loop detectors with video detection in many locations and that cameras used for detection “don’t provide any monitoring” and “they’re not recording anything,” though separate roundabout cameras will be recorded and require licensing and setup costs.
Pickett said roundabout paving may be trickier but should not require full closures—only delays—and that a new turn lane project will continue for several more weeks. Members asked whether resurfacing would require full road closures; Pickett said it would not, save for localized work on roundabouts.
Committee members also raised a crosswalk on South Main that has been painted and signed but is not yet active because a utility pole relocation and controller cabinet move remain to be completed. Pickett said those infrastructure moves remain pending and no activation date was provided.
Finally, Pickett confirmed the city will put Southwood Drive Phase 1 out to bid before July 1 to connect just past Jacobs Lane; the phase will link Jacobs Ridge to the back road to Southwood.
What’s next: Staff will provide a comprehensive update at the regular council meeting; bids for Southwood Drive Phase 1 are expected before July 1.
