Council’s Planning, Community and Economic Development Committee reviewed a municipal economic development grant request from Today's Classroom on Aug. 12, with staff asking the committee to authorize a three‑year grant to support the company’s relocation to 5771 Mayfair Road.
Staff said Today's Classroom is a 49‑year‑old educational furniture company that will relocate its global headquarters and showroom from Plain Township to Green. The company will initially bring 14 full‑time employees with a payroll of about $620,000 and projects growth to roughly 18–20 employees and $806,000 payroll over five years. The MEDG request was presented as roughly $6,200 per year (about $18,600 total over three years) to help offset acquisition and renovation costs.
Committee members asked about the building location (the former GEK/TDK insurance building in the Akan Industrial Park on Mayfair Road) and confirmed the grant term and payroll projections. Staff indicated the request is part of backfill and headquarters relocation and that the committee will request time on the regular council agenda for a second reading and potential action.
The owner of Today's Classroom, Allie Griffith, was present in the meeting for the presentation; staff invited questions but the committee had none and indicated it would request council time for further consideration.
