Odor complaints prompt meeting with Mattabassett district; WPCA to review results

Director Joseph Fazino briefed the WPCA that a Dec. 31, 2024 letter and subsequent sensor data prompted concern about hydrogen sulfide (H2S) readings near the Mattabassett treatment area. Fazino said the contractor’s sensor had been giving near-zero readings earlier, then later showed pipe readings indicating H2S; staff and district representatives will meet to review sensor location, structure flow conditions and the potential addition or upgrade of a carbon-filter and fan system.
Fazino said part of the issue is a v‑notch structure that can create turbulence and spuriously high readings when flows overtop the structure. He said the district reported the structure was never fitted with the odor-control system originally intended and that the district had proposed either a stand-alone carbon filter or upgrading its existing system.
Vice Chair Phil said the district performed testing and will make repairs identified in a consultant study and that the town also held a meeting to present the study. The WPCA agreed staff should follow up and return to the board with the outcome of the scheduled meeting with the district.
Next step: staff will meet with Mattabassett district representatives, evaluate sensor location and odor control options, and report back to the WPCA.
