Flowood board approves zoning amendment, broad consent agenda and personnel hires

The Mayor and Board of Aldermen of the City of Flowood met May 2, 2016, and approved an ordinance amending provisions of the city's comprehensive zoning regulations after a brief public hearing, Mayor Gary Rhoads said. Alderman Kirk McDaniel moved to approve the ordinance; Alderman Deron Harmon seconded, and the motion received unanimous approval of board members present.
The meeting's central action was a broad consent agenda approved on a single motion by Alderman Don Flynt and seconded by Alderman Dusty Rhoads. The consent agenda included standard approvals of April minutes and a variety of claims dockets, authorization for the Local Public Agency official to sign MDOT Construction Engineering Estimate No. 2 for reimbursement of $20,850.12 for the Wirtz Road Bike Trail project, final claims dockets for multiple water and drainage projects, and extensions of Ad Valorem tax exemptions for Rockett, Inc. and Nucor Steel Jackson, Inc.
The consent agenda also included authorization for the mayor and city clerk to sign an agreement with Mirror Lake Building, LLC permitting the city to apply to the Mississippi Department of Transportation for landscaping permits, and the appointment of Don Leland as municipal judge at an annual salary of $36,000. A single motion to approve the consent agenda carried unanimously by board members present.
In personnel business, Greg Wilcox of Parks and Recreation recommended hiring Chris Bowers as Crew Foreman (Step 8). The board approved the hire on a motion from Mayor Gary Rhoads, seconded by Alderman Don Flynt.
Public Works Director Garry Miller requested and the board authorized Change Order No. 1 to reduce the contract with Thompson Brothers Drilling by $7,533.48 for the drilling of a test well; Alderman Don Flynt moved approval and the motion was seconded by Mayor Rhoads. During Other Business, Jennifer Anderson provided an update on the Flowood Chamber of Commerce; no formal action followed.
The meeting was adjourned following a motion by Alderman Deron Harmon that carried by unanimous approval. The board recorded Alderman Kathy Smithy as absent for this meeting.
