Flowood approves conditional use for school construction material and rezones Grants Ferry Road parcel

The Flowood Board of Aldermen approved two land-use measures at its May 21 meeting: a conditional-use ordinance allowing the Rankin County School District to use 25.78 acres for surface mining related to construction of Flowood High School, and a rezoning ordinance changing a parcel on Grants Ferry Road from Land Conservation (L-C) to Residential Estate (R-E).
Mike Prestage presented both applications during public hearings. No members of the public offered formal opposition to the Rankin County School District’s conditional-use request, and no formal opposition was recorded for the Grants Ferry Road rezoning; Bernard McThern asked questions about potential future development but did not object. Alderman Kirk McDaniel moved to adopt the ordinance approving the conditional use; Alderman Kathy Smith seconded. The motion passed unanimously. McDaniel then moved to adopt the rezoning ordinance for Kelli Foster/Saturn, LLC; Alderman Don Flynt seconded and the vote was unanimous.
Both measures were adopted as ordinances and recorded in the meeting minutes. The conditional use is tied to the stated purpose of supplying materials for the Flowood High School project; the rezoning changes the property's allowed uses to permit residential estate development. Applicants must follow normal permitting and any conditions stated in the adopted ordinances before commencing work.
