The Flowood Board of Aldermen unanimously approved a sign- height variance for St. Stephen's Church at 5049 Lakeland Drive at its May 7 meeting. The variance allows a church sign up to 15 feet tall, five feet higher than the 10-foot maximum in current code.
Mike Prestage presented the church's application during a public hearing; Neil Bryant, the church's attorney, spoke in favor of the request. No members of the public spoke in opposition. Alderman Kathy Smith moved to grant the variance and Alderman Deron Harmon seconded; the motion passed with unanimous board approval.
The decision was made under the board's zoning authority and was recorded on the meeting's consent/agenda documents. The board did not attach additional conditions beyond the variance itself. The next procedural step is for the church to obtain required permits and any inspections needed to install the approved sign.
