Proposal for Dodge Center Ambulance special taxing district would add about $37 per home, council hears

The Mantorville City Council heard a presentation Sept. 23 from AJ Gengler of Dodge Center Ambulance on a proposed Special Taxing District to support ambulance service. Gengler told the council the district would increase Mantorville residents’ taxes by about $37 for each home with a market value of $200,000.
Councilmember Jeff Ingalls moved and Councilmember Henry Blair seconded to remove the proposal from the table for discussion; the motion carried 4-0. The minutes record the estimate provided by Gengler but do not show a subsequent motion to create the taxing district or a vote to establish it.
The council’s action at the meeting was limited to pulling the item for discussion; there is no record in the minutes of a final decision, ordinance or ballot measure to create the district. Any formal creation of a special taxing district would require further motions, formal action by the council and, where applicable under Minnesota law, additional public-notice and procedural steps.
Because the minutes record only an estimate, the council or county would need to provide an official calculation and scope before any change in tax assessments occurs. The council moved on to other agenda items and later noted that both the sheriff contract and the ambulance taxing district items had been pulled off the table during the Public Safety portion of the meeting.
