Mayor Yergin outlines local resources as SNAP benefits could pause Nov. 1

Mayor Yergin used the Oct. 28 council meeting to outline city steps to help residents in the event federal Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) benefits are temporarily halted on Nov. 1.
"It's estimated that between 900 and 1000 households in Greene receive SNAP benefits," Yergin said. The mayor said the city has assembled and will post a list of local food pantries on its website. Beginning Nov. 1, bags will be available for pickup at the Green Branch Library during business hours and at Fire Station No. 1; the city is coordinating a Supper Smiles program with Blessings in a Backpack and local churches to expand service to families in need. Donations can be dropped off at Greene High School during school hours or at Akron General Lifestyles, the mayor said.
Yergin also announced civic-opportunity items and community events: applications are open for multiple boards and commissions (deadline Nov. 17); the Core facility will hold a grand opening Nov. 15 with ribbon cutting at 9:15 a.m. and a members-only opening Nov. 16 (charter individual memberships offered at $100 per year if purchased before Nov. 30); Veterans Day ceremonies are set for Nov. 11 at 10:45 a.m. at Green Veterans Memorial Park; and a community potluck and documentary screening will be Nov. 17 at the John Torick Center. The mayor encouraged residents to check cityofgreen.org/boards-commissions and the city’s social media for updates.
The mayor’s announcements provided immediate assistance steps for residents potentially affected by a federal SNAP pause and information on volunteer and civic opportunities and seasonal events.
