Johns Creek to use ground-penetrating radar to map Macedonia Cemetery

City manager Greer told the Johns Creek City Council on Dec. 8 that the city will advance additional investigation of Macedonia Cemetery using ground-penetrating radar (GPR) across the full two-acre site.
Greer said earlier surveys and the master plan review confirmed the presence of marked and unmarked graves on the parcel the city acquired several years ago. "We've decided to take the next step to advance our Macedonia Cemetery by doing ground-penetrating radar to cover the entirety of the two-acre site," Greer said, and staff recommended Bigman Geophysical after reviewing multiple quotes and relevant experience.
The GPR work is intended to provide more complete information across the site so the city can determine appropriate next steps for preservation, interpretation and any potential site work. Greer said the consultant has experience with similar work at Oakland Cemetery and that council had given clear direction at a prior work session to move forward with further investigation.
Council did not take a separate vote on the GPR work during the evening business beyond the staff update; staff indicated the project will proceed under the direction previously authorized by council and that more detailed findings will be reported back to the council once the consultant completes the survey.
The city’s next procedural step is to complete the consultant contract and receive the GPR report, which will then inform planning and any follow-up actions regarding interpretive signage, preservation measures or further archaeological study.
