Staff updated the Parks and Recreation Board that construction of the Willowdale Trail, including a boardwalk through the wetland, started last year and is likely to finish in March–April 2025.
A staff member said the boardwalk is expected to be delivered toward the end of January and that construction of the boardwalk will take place (weather permitting) in late January and February, putting the trail opening in the March–April timeframe. The trail will add a connection in the park system, tying Bettler and Southgate and creating about a six-mile trail network between the two parks.
Board members asked whether a cleared pipeline corridor (the Dominion Line) should be signed as an official trail; staff said the corridor is not an official trail but will be addressed in the wayfinding program with signage directing people where to go.
Staff cautioned that sections remain muddy or frozen depending on conditions and said park maps will be updated to include the new trail alignment once finalized.
Next steps: staff will coordinate wayfinding signage updates and post a final map on the city's website when construction is complete.
