Board amends police code to prohibit vehicle sideshows; ordinance passes first reading

The Board of Supervisors on Oct. 1 considered an ordinance to amend the police code to prohibit vehicle sideshows and classify violations as misdemeanors. Supervisor Dorsey proposed an amendment to the ordinance’s findings adding specific enforcement data and clarifying the scope of dangerous street-takeover maneuvers.
Supervisor Dorsey read proposed language into the record adding a line clarifying that of 67 vehicles seized, “including 8 from sideshows and 59 others from reckless evasion when a person flees or attempts to elude a pursuing officer while driving with willfully or wanton disregard for the safety of persons or property including street takeover maneuvers such as donuts and burnouts.” He said the amendment was distributed to colleagues and sought clarity the board requested last week.
President Peskin called the motion; the amendment was adopted and the ordinance was passed on first reading as amended. The board and sponsor indicated a second reading would occur as required by ordinance procedure.

Outcome: Amendment adopted; ordinance passed first reading. The item will return for the second reading/vote consistent with municipal procedure.
