Advisory committee forwards shortlist of names for Johns Creek Town Center park

The Recreation and Parks Advisory Committee on Nov. 20 reviewed public nominations and recommended a short list of names to send to Johns Creek City Council for the new park behind City Hall.
Bob Mullen, communications director for the city of Johns Creek, told the committee the survey collected 675 name entries between late September and Nov. 1 and that 16 submissions were ruled ineligible under the city’s naming policy. “You can read, you know, kind of, down if you want which ones have been added,” Mullen said, and explained the committee’s task was to identify five to 10 names to forward to council.
Committee members used a QR-code ballot during the meeting to explore the most commonly submitted words and discussed combining those words into longer, more meaningful names. The group discussed whether to use place-based words that reflect the area (Town Center, Creekside) versus more evocative choices (Harmony, Serenity) and whether subfeatures such as the amphitheater or lake should have separate names.
Several members emphasized longevity and clarity for visitors. “It needs a name that’s very quick, you know. This is Johns Creek Town Center,” one committee member said. Another asked that the committee be mindful of honoring the public’s contributions to the survey rather than discarding suggestions because of form or frequency.
At the end of the session the committee agreed to forward a compact set of recommendations to council that included Town Center/Town Center Park variants, Creekside or Creekside at Town Center, a water-themed option (e.g., Lakeview or Lakeside), Serenity/Harmony, and Founders or Founders Park as contenders for consideration. Mullen said the committee’s list will be presented at an upcoming council work session; council has not set a decision deadline and may take more time or choose a different name.
Next steps: staff will submit the committee’s recommendation packet to council for review, and the council will make the final naming decision.
