Chaffee council approves capped gravel purchase, library pay bump; schedules tax-rate hearing

Chaffee — At its regular meeting on Aug. 5, 2024, the Chaffee City Council approved routine expenditures and scheduled a public hearing on the tax-rate levy for Aug. 19, the council record shows.
Mayor Steve Loucks opened the meeting and the council approved the minutes of the previous meeting after the Assistant City Clerk read them. Police Chief Sullivan presented the monthly Nuisance Report; the record notes discussion but no formal action on that item.
Fire Chief Glency requested gravel to clean up an area behind the fire station and asked that public works staff spread it. Council member Andy Sadler moved to cap the gravel purchase at $1,200; Mark Perkins seconded the motion. The council was polled and the motion carried.
The Assistant City Clerk presented two vendor bills — MFA Oil for $2,373.17 and Republic Services for $15,982.75 — and the council approved payment after a motion by Andy Sadder and a second from Steve Milz; the record indicates the council was polled and the motion carried. Eric Seyer moved to approve the July 2024 Collector's Report; Andy Sadler seconded the motion and the council voted 'All in Favor.'
On personnel matters, the City Administrator reported that the Library Board recommended raising Tina Horton’s hourly pay from $15.00 to $16.00 retroactive to Jan. 1, 2024. Mark Perkins moved to approve the increase; Steve Milz seconded, and the council carried the motion.
The City Administrator announced a public hearing on the tax-rate levy is scheduled for the Aug. 19 council meeting. He also said the Scott County Tax Sale will occur Aug. 26, 2024 and that the council will go into closed session at the next meeting to discuss that matter further. The administrator added that bids will be sought for tree removals on Main Street and Heeb Street, and that the city has published a digital map to support compliance with the Lead and Copper Rule at map.cityofchaffee.com.
