Brentwood police and fire report lower crime, training completions and active hiring

Brentwood’s police and fire leaders updated the Public Safety Commission on Jan. 7 about operations, staffing and recent incidents.
Major Sullivan reported overall crime is down and said a comprehensive crime report will be presented at a later meeting. He told commissioners the retail holiday detail produced six documented incidents and five arrests. Sullivan also said 22 officers have completed the 0311 tactical training sessions, the police department kitchen renovation is complete and under budget, and letters of commendation and an Officer of the Year award will be presented at an upcoming Board of Aldermen meeting. Sullivan said the department is investigating a sex-offender complaint raised in public comment.
Interim Chief Ed Beirne reported an active hiring and recruitment effort after recent resignations in the fire department. Applications are being accepted through Jan. 16; written testing dates are scheduled for Jan. 20, 22 and 24, with medical/practical evaluations and interviews to follow. Site work for a shared training tower is on schedule and the department expects early-spring completion; purchases of loose equipment approved in the FY25 budget are 99% complete and continue to arrive weekly. Beirne said the new fire truck remains on schedule for delivery in January 2026 with a tentative final-inspection visit by the committee during the third week of January.
Beirne also said Public Consulting Group (PCG) is conducting FY25 data collection for the MOGEMT program and staff plan to present a resolution to the Jan. 28 Public Safety Committee meeting to confirm continued participation and authorize changes in fee-collection percentages. He reported several recent alarms: a vehicle crashed into the Mattress Firm at 1900 S. Brentwood on Nov. 19, causing major storefront damage and required shoring; Brentwood units assisted Webster Groves Fire Department with two house fires reported Dec. 1 and Dec. 3 at the same address; and Brentwood assisted Rock Hill Fire Department with a house fire Dec. 5 that required a second alarm. No injuries were reported.
Beirne said the department transitioned to the National Emergency Response Information System (NERIS) on Nov. 1; because the agency’s RMS vendor (ESO) is holding files pending upload, monthly performance measures reports are temporarily delayed.
