The Taos City Council voted June 1 to grant a temporary nonconforming-usage variance that will allow an automotive repair shop to operate at 6002 Helias Drive from July 1, 2026, through June 30, 2027. Mayor Ron Walker said the Board of Adjustments recommended the variance after meeting May 20, 2026.
Alderman Tom Wieberg moved to adopt the Board of Adjustments recommendation; Alderman Viola Schaefer seconded the motion. The minutes record aye votes from Aldermen Matt Forck, Viola Schaefer, Tom Wieberg and Bob Cynova, and the motion passed.
The variance is temporary and intended to permit the automotive business to operate at the address while a permanent building is constructed. The council did not record conditions beyond the one-year term in the meeting minutes. The Board of Adjustments’ recommendation in the record specified the effective dates as July 1, 2026 to June 30, 2027.
The council took the vote as part of new business and did not request further staff follow-up in the minutes. The approval is recorded in the official meeting minutes and will be reflected in the municipal records for land-use approvals.
