The council approved two separate contract actions during its Feb. 2 meeting: the appointment of Sabatini Law Firm as city attorney and authorization for a one-year federal lobbying contract with Southern Group of Florida not to exceed $83,000.
City staff noted Sabatini Law Firm will serve at the council's pleasure with a 30-day termination/transition clause. A representative for the firm told the council they have been responsive and that the 30-day termination period is intended to provide a transition window.
On lobbying, City Manager Mamoni said the city's forthcoming stormwater master plan could involve roughly $100 million in capital projects for the first phase and that federal advocacy would help secure funding. "I think time is of the essence so I would, I'm seeking to hire Southern Group of Florida as our government affairs and lobbying firm," Mamoni said. The council approved entering into the contract to pursue federal funding; staff clarified the firm may assist with state matters while the city retains its state lobbyist.
Both motions passed by roll call. Staff said both contracts are intended to accelerate the city's ability to obtain outside funding and to ensure legal counsel is available during the next wave of project work.
