Board approves directional-sign variances for Summa Health site

The Green Board of Zoning Appeals unanimously approved variances on Sept. 19 to allow a larger directional sign for Summa Health at 1790 Greenville/Graybill Road. Fast Signs of Akron representative Michael Ruth said the facility needs the larger sign so the word "endocrinology" is legible to patients, particularly older users.
Ruth described the sign as a high-quality post-and-panel aluminum directional sign and said its dimensions are consistent with industry practice for medical directional signage. Planning staff recalculated the requested dimensions after confirming a 58-inch height and computed the resulting area as about 12.325 square feet where 4 square feet is the maximum allowed, yielding an 8.325-square-foot variance.
A nearby property owner, Ruth Gensler of Gensler Tool and Die, asked whether the sign would be closer to her property or the cul-de-sac; the board and applicant clarified the sign is set back near the cul-de-sac and would not be in front of the neighbor's parking area. With that clarification, a board member moved to approve the modified height and area variances (height up to approximately 4 feet 10 inches and area ~12.325 sq ft); the motion was seconded and passed 3–0.
The board recorded the adjusted measurements on the record and approved the variances as modified.
