Library staff reports strong summer turnout; community volunteer help and roof repairs raised in public comment

During the Aug. 11 meeting of the Tonto Basin Elementary School District #33 Governing School Board, a library report and public comments highlighted summer programming, a Kiwanis donation and community requests for grounds maintenance and volunteer help.
Library staff member Ms. Sheila reported the summer reading program averaged 26 children per day in July. "She had 26 kids daily for July only," Ms. Sheila said, and the program provided snacks and lunch, which she described as easier than serving breakfast last year. The program concluded with a sleepover and will resume after-school programming beginning Sept. 8; Ms. Sheila said she will get the schedule to Ms. Hana and work with Superintendent Mrs. Warren on an ERP. Ms. Sheila presented a $2,500 check from Kiwanis to Ms. Ewing for the sports season.
In her superintendent report, Mrs. Warren thanked Kiwanis for the back-to-school snacks and said Open House had good turnout, with Cactus Flats providing pizza. She reported the prospective 7th/8th grade teacher did not meet test requirements and will retest, and that teachers are adjusting to last year's new curriculum. Board member Ms. Robin Holt raised questions about the HVAC project; minutes record some back-and-forth discussion but no decision recorded.
During non-agenda public comment, community member Billie Menefee told the board Kiwanis approved re-roofing the Kiwanis-built ramada on school grounds and that Mrs. Warren is providing shingles. Menefee said weeds around school grounds were "horrible" and asked whether the district employs a groundskeeper; she recommended the board enlist community volunteers. She also asked about staff salaries in the proposed budget and said she will work with Mrs. Dean to start AG Days for younger students.
The board took no immediate formal action on grounds maintenance or volunteer coordination during the meeting; vouchers and multiple policy items were handled later in the agenda. A future agenda item was listed to consider 301 funds for teacher performance pay.
