The Tonto Basin Elementary School District board on July 14 approved an outsourced special education (SPED) teacher contract after the district did not find a local certified teacher. Superintendent Mrs. Warren recommended a contractor who offered an option with 61 on-site days for the school year and additional virtual coverage when travel prevented in-person service.
During discussion, Mrs. Warren noted other bidders had proposed fully virtual services and stressed the district's need for on-site coverage. Board members asked clarifying questions about the number of SPED students and bids; Mrs. Warren said current SPED counts include three high-needs students, two assigned for reading and math supports, and additional students receiving speech services. Mrs. Warren disclosed the recommended contractor is her sister-in-law, who retired last year; the board proceeded to approve the contract.
Mr. Sterling Thomas moved to approve the SPED bid and Mrs. Laci Sopeland seconded; the motion passed unanimously. The contract will be billed monthly; Mrs. Warren said if the contractor cannot be on site because of travel conditions she will provide virtual services and the board may revisit on-site time at a later date.
