Councilman Gwan told the Borough of Old Tappan mayor and council that this year’s budget process was "very rigorous" and described the draft as "a sensible budget" that still needs review with the municipal auditor before a final vote, expected in about a month.
"Where there were increases, they were either mandatory or necessary," Gwan said, citing wage contracts, health-care insurance and needed capital purchases. He also noted an OEM tabletop exercise on Feb. 11 and activities in the fire department, including recent HAZMAT awareness training and an upcoming SCBA refresher.
Councilman Marty reported emergency-response activity and public-health items: "First aid corps responded to a total of 11 calls for service in the month of January," he said, and the ambulance committee is moving forward with a new ambulance order. Marty also announced a Board of Health community health fair on March 7 at the firehouse and two community blood drives on April 20 and July 30.
The police report summarized January activity: "Calls for service, it was 1,188," the report states, along with 138 vehicle stops that produced 81 summonses and 10 motor-vehicle accidents. The report noted one DUI, numerous training items, two officers attending SWAT training and ongoing accreditation work.
Council members thanked DPW crews for post-storm cleanup and discussed overtime pressures if more snow events occur. No decisions altering the budget were taken at this meeting; the council signaled it will review the auditor’s findings before finalizing the budget.
