Newell to pursue Hometown Pride membership for grant support and park projects

Newell — The Newell City Council and Community Foundation voted April 6 to pursue joining Hometown Pride, a program that offers coaching and grant-writing support to communities.
Council member Larry Nielsen moved to proceed with the application and Quinten Robinson seconded; the motion passed unanimously. Council and foundation members said the Foundation will act as local champions and will recruit additional champions from the school and business community.
Margo Underwood, identified in the discussion as the Hometown Pride coach with roughly 15 years of experience, was cited as a resource for grant-writing and community development. The program fee discussed in the meeting is $2,500 per year with an expected five-year commitment and an application deadline of May 15.
Council member Bill Henrich said he believes existing city code supports the Park Board’s oversight of community green spaces: “I believe city code already indicates the Park Board oversees all open areas in town,” Henrich said. Mayor Justin Lyman said he will draft a written summary of Park Board expectations for council review.
Potential projects mentioned during the discussion included park upgrades, a bike/walking trail, ADA compliance improvements to the shelter house and golf course clubhouse, and a dog park. Foundation members present agreed to serve as champions and to pursue grants on behalf of the city and community groups.
The council recorded its support for application work to proceed; foundation staff and volunteer champions will complete the formal application by the stated deadline.
