Public Works Director Doug Lange told the Newell City Council on Jan. 5 that the city produced 3,780,000 gallons of water (about 122,000 gallons per day) and received 5,059,000 gallons at the wastewater plant (about 163,000 gallons per day); higher wastewater volumes were attributed to snowmelt and inflow/infiltration and are now trending down.
Lange said the water tower level is intentionally lowered in winter and the pump on/off set points are tightened to reduce freeze risk, which can produce a small pressure drop estimated at 2–5 psi in some locations, notably during showers. A recurring problem near First Congregational Church required professional jetting and flushing, which restored performance; the city plans a systematic flushing program across town over several years.
Fire Chief Bruce Erie reported the department roster at 19 firefighters (maximum capacity 27), ongoing prevention and education work, and that an on-duty firefighter resigned because he could not continue to serve. The council approved the department’s 2026 officer slate (motion by Larry Nielsen; second by Quinten Robinson). Erie, serving also as ambulance chief, said the ambulance service is short on drivers and — more critically — on EMTs; one driver applicant must complete defensive driving and a CDL is not required for that role.
Council asked for follow-up where appropriate and noted equipment maintenance and well‑3 performance (suitable for emergency use but with lower output and higher iron content) as items to monitor for long‑term planning.
