Mount Pleasant board approves wage increases for staff, passes summer tax levy and AI policy

At its Dec. 15 meeting, the Mount Pleasant Public School Board of Education approved multiple personnel and financial actions: tentative wage agreements that provide 4% increases for three bargaining groups, a summer tax levy resolution necessary for next summer’s cash flow, and a new acceptable-use policy for generative artificial intelligence (Policy 4229).
Administration summarized three tentative agreements described as 4% wage increases "on schedule" for the Mount Pleasant Transportation Association (transportation and maintenance employees), the Mount Pleasant Support Personnel Association (secretaries, paraprofessionals, media assistants and hall monitors), and the Mount Pleasant Education Association (teachers). The board approved the agreements by motion; the teachers’ agreement also included a tentative 2026–27 calendar. Board member Andrew Brockman recused himself from the teachers’ agreement vote, stating his wife is a teacher.
The board also approved a summer tax levy resolution that allows the district to levy half the Mount Pleasant property taxes in summer to aid cash flow. Administration explained the levy must be passed before the end of the calendar year; the board approved the resolution by roll call, with recorded yes votes from Jessica Jernigan, Weeden Pangle, Andrew Brockman, Melissa Isaac, (Derek/ Eric) Snyder and Tim Modica as noted in the meeting record.
Board members then considered Policy 4229, the district’s acceptable-use policy for generative artificial intelligence. Administration recommended deleting an optional sentence that would require staff to obtain prior approval for AI use; the board moved to approve the revised policy and passed it by voice vote.
Other formal actions recorded at the meeting included approval of the superintendent’s annual evaluation and the board’s consent to bills totaling $2,797,298.03. The board approved a hire for a new McGuire Elementary special-education teacher and moved several items into the January organizational meeting schedule.
The board discussed bond-sale timing and an amended budget, with administration indicating the district will begin the bond-selling process in early January and aim to complete it by the end of February; the amended budget is expected to return to the board in January.
