Mount Pleasant board approves new AP Business and Personal Finance course after presentation

The Mount Pleasant Public School Board of Education on Dec. 15 approved an AP Business with Personal Finance course after a presentation by career-technical staff and a public discussion about scheduling and equity.
Superintendent Jennifer Verliger introduced Pat Ansa and Carrie Lockwood of GITech, who described a project-based curriculum combining marketing, accounting and management with a personal-finance focus. "They're very modern, up to date business situations," Lockwood said, noting the course includes case studies and an opportunity for students to sit for the AP exam in May 2027 and to earn industry-recognized credentials.
Administrators said the course could satisfy Michigan’s personal finance graduation requirement for cohorts that include students who entered eighth grade in fall 2023 and could serve as an alternative fourth-year math option. The presenters said College Board certification for at least one teacher would be required; Lockwood would attend a three-day training over the summer. The district indicated the training and most startup costs would be covered by available grants and College Board support, and counselors will assist students who need financial help to pay AP exam fees.
Board members questioned whether the class would replace existing tech-center block courses and how to avoid scheduling conflicts. Presenters said the course is intended as a high-school offering that complements CTE block courses and noted counselors will work on placement so students are not overburdened. The course is designed to fit the district’s 72-minute block schedule across two trimesters.
After discussion, the board added the course to the agenda as new business and voted to approve it. Chair called for voice vote; members responded “Aye.” Superintendent Verliger said the district will list the course in the course offering guide pending implementation steps including teacher certification and final scheduling.
The board’s action paves the way for a pilot offering as early as next school year, with students eligible to take the AP exam in May 2027 and to pursue industry credentials and graduation-credit options depending on outcomes and college transfer policies.
