Green Community Fund awards $15,000 to eight local nonprofits

Mike Jones, representing the Green Community Fund, told the Green City Council on March 11 that the fund completed its first grant cycle and awarded $15,000 to eight local nonprofits.
"We awarded $15,000 to eight nonprofits," Jones said, and listed the recipients and award amounts: Blessings in the Backpack ($3,000); Fellowship Works ($2,500); First Tee of Greater Akron in Green ($1,500); Green YMCA ($1,000); Green Good Neighbors ($2,500); Green Soccer Association ($1,500); MAPS Air Museum ($1,500); and Rail Charitable Organization ($1,500). Jones said 15 organizations applied for the cycle.
Jones said the Green Community Fund is a sub-fund of the Akron Community Foundation and that donors can give through the foundation’s website. He added the fund has approached $400,000 in total assets and the group hopes to grow contributions to support more local organizations.
Council members thanked the presenters and the chair noted there were no additional public reports or speakers for the night. The presentation was placed in the public record; no formal action or vote was taken on the grants during the meeting.
